Here are the top selling wines on Tmall last year

China’s most popular wine list on Tmall is showing a split personality. On one end: dirt-cheap, sugary, TikTok-friendly local bottles flying off the virtual shelves. On the other: premium heavyweights like Penfolds refusing to budge from their throne.

No. 2 Ca’ dei Frati I Frati Lugana Dry White Wine
Origin: Italy
Grape variety: Turbiana
Price: RMB 198 (about US$27)
Alcohol: 13.0% vol

Like the No. 4 wine, this product also comes from Chinese influencer Xiao Pi’s store and is imported by Zefiro Wines. Together, the two wines are among the few products in the top five that rely less on broad brand recognition.

Yet Xiao Pi, as a recognised figure in China’s wine trade, has built a personal brand strong enough to drive sales even for boutique wines with relatively limited name recognition. That, in turn, highlights an important feature of Taobao and Tmall: content, curation and operational skill can matter just as much as brand power in breaking through online.

At present, the wine has recorded 700-plus sales in the past 30 days and has remained in the top three for two consecutive weeks. Over the past 365 days, total sales across Taobao and Tmall have exceeded 10,000.
