In a market where speed and convenience reign supreme, China’s leading instant retail platform Meituan is betting big on booze.
Back in 2021, the tech giant launched “Waima Alcohol Delivery” (歪马送酒), a dedicated, in-house drinks delivery service that promises affordable prices, guaranteed authenticity—and doorstep delivery of alcoholic beverages in as little as 15 minutes.
From the WeChat mini-program to the Meituan app, consumers can order wine with just a few taps and have it delivered straight from local warehouses by Waima’s army of delivery staff. By 2024, the service had expanded to more than 140 cities across China with over 1,400 locations, and it’s on track to generate over RMB 3 billion (US$ 417 million) in sales this year, according to the company.
With access to Meituan’s 680 million daily active users, Waima is now offering a rare glimpse into what Chinese consumers are actually drinking. The “Top 10 Popular Wines” list reflects real-time demand and features both household names and Waima’s own growing portfolio of private-label wines. Some familiar faces from Jiu Xiao Er’s top 10 make a return—but there are also a few surprises.
Notably, four of the top ten wines are white, including the top two spots—an unthinkable scenario even five years ago. It’s yet another signal that China’s white wine boom isn’t just hype; it’s being driven by genuine, sustained consumer demand.
So which wines made the cut? The full list—based on combined sales volume and value in the Shanghai region—is below. Unlike the Jiu Xiao Er ranking, this list includes several higher-priced bottles, with some reaching up to RMB 650, highlighting the stronger spending power of Shanghai consumers. Scroll through the pages below to see which wines made it—and which ones might surprise you.
