Mustilli Piedirosso Artus 2017

Piedirosso, meaning “red feet” in Italian, is an indigenous red grape variety that is gradually making a comeback today.
It has ancient origins native of the Naples area, Campania and between 18th and 19th century it spread to province of Avellino and in the area of Vesuvius and Mount Somma.
Until recently the Piedirosso grape was mainly used in blend with other local grapes mainly, the king grape of Campania – Aglianico, but in the last few years thanks to a few winemakers including Mustilli in Sannio, the grape is enjoying a renaissance, producing outstanding 100% Piedirosso red wines.
The historic Mustilli winery planted first vines on the hills of Santacroce in 1700, and has been making serious wines in mid 20th century. Known for the winery’s championing of Falanghina grape, it also produces “Artus”, a light and balanced 100% Piedirosso del Sannio. The wine is aged in ceramic tanks for 10 months. The nose opens to notes of plums, berries, sweet spices and light balsamic flavors. The sip reveals an agile and fresh body, excellent tannins and great expressive purity.
