Instant retail is the new battleground for wine consumption in China (pic: ChatGPT)

China’s next big wine opportunity may not be found in luxury hotels or fine dining restaurants, but in the scroll of a hungry, wine-curious consumer’s smartphone through instant retail.

Who’s Who: The Top 6 Instant Retailers in China

Meituan

As China’s largest instant retail platform, Meituan posted RMB 337.6 billion (US$ 46.5 billion) in revenue in 2024, up 22% year-on-year. Operating profit jumped nearly 175% to RMB 36.8 billion. Its delivery infrastructure now spans nearly 3,000 cities and counties, with 3.36 million active monthly riders, and consistently delivers within 30 minutes.

In alcohol, Meituan has partnered with major retailers like 1919, Jiuxiao’er, COFCO Wine & Wine, and Vats Liquor Store. The platform favours big-name, high-value labels such as Torre Oria’s Knock Knock (RMB 28.9), Rawson’s Retreat (RMB 36), Chilled Oyster Bay (RMB 85) and Grand Bateau (RMB 89).

To further tap into alcohol sales, Meituan launched Waima Wine Delivery in 2021—an in-house, drinks-specific delivery platform operating over 1,000 forward warehouses across 100 cities. Waima directly sources products from producers and manages its own supply chain, offering everything from affordable Chilean red to popular international brands like DBR Lafite and Penfolds priced over RMB 200.

Though Meituan hasn’t released standalone performance data for Waima, sources suggest its 2024 sales target was RMB 3 billion (US$ 412 million). For wineries, there are two entry points: direct collaboration with Waima or via third-party retailers already active on Meituan’s platform.
