Instant retail is the new battleground for wine consumption in China (pic: ChatGPT)

China’s next big wine opportunity may not be found in luxury hotels or fine dining restaurants, but in the scroll of a hungry, wine-curious consumer’s smartphone through instant retail.

Ele.me

Owned by Alibaba, Ele.me operates similarly to Meituan. It claims coverage in over 2,000 cities, with tens of thousands of merchants and average delivery times of 30 minutes. In 2024, revenue for Alibaba’s local services segment (including Ele.me and Amap) rose 12% to RMB 16.2 billion, while losses narrowed significantly from RMB 1.98 billion to RMB 386 million.

Wine offerings are dominated by crowd-pleasing brands like Penfolds, Knock Knock, and Casillero del Diablo, with limited product differentiation. While Ele.me doesn’t disclose alcohol-specific revenue, during June 2024, wine and beverage orders rose 22% YoY. In the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, wine orders surged 66% week-on-week, according to data disclosed by the company.

This signals growing consumer willingness to purchase wine through instant platforms, especially around key gifting and dining occasions.
