Caution
The market’s chill has made importers extremely cautious in purchasing new products, a sentiment evident at this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur Week, Vinexpo Hong Kong, ProWine Shanghai, and various roadshows.
Despite a slight drop in Bordeaux En Primeur prices in 2023, several Chinese boutique wine merchants interviewed by Vino Joy News indicated they would refrain from purchasing due to weak demand. Some importers with purchasing plans are also cautious, stating they would only buy established brands like Lafite, Latour, and Haut-Brion, along with competitively priced wines.
At this year’s Vinexpo Hong Kong and ProWine Shanghai, several exhibitors told Vino Joy News that while buyers were slightly more optimistic compared to 2023, they remained cautious in placing orders.
The chill of a tightening market seemed to permeate every aspect of the wine industry. In the distribution sector, many small and medium-sized businesses preferred to seek domestic sources rather than import independently. Supply chain companies were only restocking popular products, while distributors opted not to prepare stocks in advance, instead purchasing only upon confirmed orders.
The pervasive restraint highlights the ongoing uncertainty within the market, as stakeholders prioritize risk management over growth in an environment still marked by unpredictability.
