When 30 benchmark Chardonnays from the world’s most celebrated wine regions were assembled for a double-blind tasting in London, few would have predicted the winner.
It was neither a grand cru Burgundy nor a cult Californian label. Instead, the title of “World’s Greatest Chardonnay” went to a wine from Tasmania.
At the London Wine Fair’s Icon Tasting: The Greatest Chardonnay Showdown, the 2023 Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay was crowned the world’s top Chardonnay, outperforming some of the most prestigious names in the category.
Australia’s performance was particularly striking. Three Australian wines placed in the top 10, with Tolpuddle Vineyard and Vasse Felix claiming first and second place respectively, underscoring the remarkable rise of Australian Chardonnay over the past decade.
The tasting brought together 18 of the United Kingdom’s most respected wine professionals. More than two-thirds of the panel held either Master of Wine (MW) or Master Sommelier (MS) qualifications, including Jancis Robinson MW OBE, Dawn Davies MW, Tony Lécuroux MS and Pierpaolo Petrassi MW.
Designed to compare the world’s leading Chardonnays from both established and emerging regions, the tasting featured 30 invited wines assessed under strict double-blind conditions over a three-hour session.
The top Australian performers were:
- Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay (1st)
- Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay (2nd)
- Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay (7th)
Commenting on the result, Tolpuddle Vineyard founders Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith AM MW said: “Having our wine selected in a lineup of this calibre was already a huge honour. To then see Tolpuddle Vineyard come out on top in a tasting judged by some of the world’s finest palates is genuinely mind-blowing.
With Australia having three wines in the top ten, this confirms that modern Australian Chardonnay now sits comfortably alongside the world’s best.”

From Love at First Sight to Global Recognition
Among Tasmania’s growing number of premium wineries, few have enjoyed a rise as rapid as Tolpuddle Vineyard.
The story began in 2011 when Shaw + Smith founders Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith travelled to Tasmania to explore the region’s potential. During the trip, they visited Tolpuddle Vineyard, a site planted in 1988 in the Coal River Valley.
What was intended as a research visit quickly became something more.
The pair have often described their first encounter with the vineyard as “love at first sight”, and ultimately acquired the property.
Since then, Tolpuddle Vineyard has focused exclusively on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, earning an international reputation for wines that combine purity, precision and a distinct cool-climate character.
The latest accolade is only the most recent in a string of international successes.
At the recently announced International Wine Challenge (IWC), the 2024 Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay was awarded both the Australian White Trophy and the Tasmanian Chardonnay Trophy.
Scoring 96 points, the wine was described by judges as “refined with great energy and focus”.
The achievement marked the second consecutive year that Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay has won the Australian White Trophy. In the previous edition, it went one step further, claiming Champion White Wine, the highest honour awarded to a white wine at the competition.
Over the years, Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay has also received the Best Australian Chardonnay award and the International Chardonnay Trophy, while Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir was awarded the Australian Red Trophy in 2021.
Allocation-Only Releases Fuel Demand
The steady stream of international accolades has helped make Tolpuddle Vineyard one of Australia’s most sought-after producers.
The winery now operates an allocation system for new releases, with consumers required to join a waiting list for an opportunity to purchase wines directly from the estate.
Each vintage typically sells out shortly after release, leaving only limited quantities available through specialist fine wine retailers and leading restaurant wine lists.
In Hong Kong, Tolpuddle Vineyard is represented by wine importer and distributor Links Concept.
