Rare Japanese whisky and scotch drams are commanding astronomical prices at auctions. Here, we have rounded up five of the most expensive whiskies ever sold in the world.

No. 2 The Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami 60 Year Old – sold for US$1.1 million

Hailed as the “holy grail of whisky”, The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60 Year Old is one of the 12 bottles from the storied scotch whisky distillery with labels designed by Italian artist Valerio Adami. Bottled from cask #263, this is one of the few bottles from the cask that have been breaking world records one after another just in the past two years.

In May 2018, Bonhams debuted two bottles from the same cask at an auction in Hong Kong, one with Valerio Adami label and another with Peter Baker label. The Peter Baker label was sold for HK$7.9 million (US$1.01 million), setting a new world record, and just hours later, the Valerio label smashed it with a record price of HK$8.6 million (US$1.1 million) at the same auction.

Five months later in Edinburgh, the auction house sold another bottle of the Valerio Adami bottle for £848,750 (US$1.1 million) to an Asian collector.

Although 12 bottles of The Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 were produced, it is not known how many of them still exist. One is said to have been destroyed in an earthquake in Japan in 2011, and at least one of the bottles has been opened and consumed.
