VIK Winery became the first Chilean winery ever to be named the "World's Best Vineyard" distinction.

While more and more wineries continue to compete through critic scores, historic prestige, and legendary vintages, a winery hidden deep within the valleys of Chile has risen to the top through the complete brand value created by both its wines and its immersive estate experience. Here, architecture, art, hospitality, natural landscapes, and terroir philosophy are woven together into an entirely new narrative of luxury.

Recently, VIK Winery was named the “World’s Best Vineyard” for 2025 by World’s 50 Best Vineyards, becoming the first Chilean winery ever to receive this distinction.

Vik Winery made history being named the World’s Best Vineyard, the only Chilean winery to receive the prestigious title.

“The World’s 50 Best Vineyards,” launched by the UK-based William Reed group, is regarded as one of the world’s most influential rankings focused on winery tourism and hospitality experiences. On its official website, the organization describes VIK as a winery that “combines wine, architecture, landscape, and luxury experiences,” while highlighting that it “places innovation and science at the core of everything it does.”

At the awards ceremony, Alexander Vik expressed great excitement about the winery’s achievement. He stated, “We have an incredible winery, an outstanding restaurant, and a beautiful hilltop hotel – wherever you look, you see works of art and installations.”

His wife, Carrie Vik, added, “Of course, wine is always at the center. But what truly matters is the overall experience: horseback riding through the valley, enjoying massages, or participating in our VIK Zero program, where guests harvest ingredients from our organic garden and cook them themselves… We are very fortunate to have a team that truly understands the spirit of hospitality.”

Notably, VIK Winery did not achieve its success overnight. The winery ranked third in 2023, rose to second place in 2024, and ultimately claimed the top position in 2025. Over the course of three years, this winery from Chile’s Cachapoal Valley completed a remarkable ascent toward becoming the world’s number one vineyard. Its journey to the top has since become a legendary story within the Chilean wine industry.

The Pursuit of an Ideal Terroir

The story of VIK Winery began in 2004. Founders Alexander Vik and Carrie Vik set out with a vision: to cultivate a world-class vineyard, create a winery that combined sustainability with innovation and technology, and ultimately produce some of the finest wines in South America and the world.

To achieve this ambition, they assembled a multidisciplinary team of climatologists, geologists, viticulturists, and winemakers to search across South America for the ideal terroir. After two years of research, the team ultimately discovered the perfect site in Millahue, located within Chile’s Cachapoal Valley.

Spanning more than 4,300 hectares, the estate showcases extraordinary natural diversity within a single property. Variations in elevation, slope orientation, sunlight exposure, soil composition, and cooling Pacific Ocean wind corridors together create a complex system of finely differentiated micro-terroirs. Notably, “Millahue” means “Place of Gold” in the language of the indigenous Mapuche people — a name that, in many ways, foreshadowed the legendary story this land would later inspire.

“We are not seeking uniformity; instead, we embrace this diversity,” said Andrea García, Marketing Director.

According to Andrea every vineyard parcel is harvested and vinified separately, using precision viticulture techniques to fully express the identity of each site. It is this holistic understanding of terroir that gives VIK wines their depth, elegance, energy, and distinctive sense of place.

Barroir, Fleuroir, Amphoir

Although VIK Winery firmly believes that “80% of a wine’s quality is determined in the vineyard,” this does not mean the winery lacks an innovative spirit. On the contrary, VIK is one of the few wineries capable of deeply integrating traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde thinking.

At the winemaking level, VIK has developed three distinctive concepts: Barroir, Amphoir, and Fleuroir.

Vik has three unique winemaking concepts, namely, Barroir, Amphoir, and Fleuroir.

Among them, Barroir is one of the winery’s most iconic innovations, combining the words “barrel” and “terroir.”

VIK has established a fully integrated, in-house cooperage programme, with all barrels crafted from French oak. Every stage of production from barrel-making to toasting is carried out by hand at the winery’s own cooperage. Notably, the oak used for toasting is sourced from naturally fallen trees within the Millahue Valley, extending the estate’s terroir-driven philosophy into every aspect of its barrel-making process.

As a result, the wines display greater elegance, with finer, more refined tannins and a restrained yet precise balance between fruit expression and oak influence.

VIK created its own estate-driven barrel program

Amphoir combines the words “amphora” and “terroir.” In this project, wines are fermented and aged in clay amphorae crafted from the winery’s own soils. Filled with wine and left outdoors to mature naturally, these amphorae allow the wines to evolve slowly with minimal human intervention.

The Amphoir series is often characterized by exceptional purity, energy, texture, and minerality, while maintaining remarkable freshness and transparency of fruit.

Fleuroir, meanwhile, explores the relationship between native flowers and aromatic expression in wine.

Inspired by the rich biodiversity of Millahue, the project studies how the surrounding ecosystem influences the sensory profile of the wines. It reflects VIK’s understanding that terroir extends beyond geology into ecological and emotional dimensions as well.

“These innovations collectively represent VIK’s vision of redefining fine wine through science, sustainability, creativity, and a profound respect for nature,” said Andrea García.

A Luxury Positioning

VIK’s continuous investment in quality and innovation has quickly earned the winery international recognition.

According to Andrea García, the winery’s flagship wine, VIK, is positioned among the world’s leading luxury wines, competing alongside the highest tier of international fine wines. Meanwhile, labels such as Milla Cala and La Piu Belle introduce consumers to the VIK philosophy through a sense of “accessible luxury” and distinctive artistic storytelling.

Notably, VIK 2021 received perfect 100-point scores from both James Suckling and Gilbert & Gaillard, and was also named one of the “Top 10 Wines of the World” by JamesSuckling.com. VIK 2022 likewise earned 100 points from Gilbert & Gaillard.

The brand has become one of the preferred choices among fine wine enthusiasts worldwide.

Winery Tourism: The Ultimate Experience

What VIK Winery offers goes far beyond high-quality wine. As Andrea García explained, the winery’s core values also include luxury, innovation, sustainability, and world-class hospitality.

For years, VIK has been regarded as one of the world’s premier wine tourism destinations. Located atop a hill in the middle of the valley, the estate sits within a more than 4,300-hectare natural reserve near the Andes Mountains. Its floating architectural structure, crafted from titanium and bronze, offers a 360-degree panoramic view overlooking the vineyards, winery, and surrounding landscapes.

Vik’s luxury hotel

Inside the hotel, guests are surrounded by an extensive collection of contemporary artworks, creating the feeling of stepping into a wine-inspired art museum. At the restaurant, visitors can experience the pairing of creative gastronomy with top-tier wines. Horseback riding through the vineyards while taking in the futuristic architecture and dramatic natural scenery has also become one of the estate’s signature experiences.

In the latest global hotel selection by Michelin Guide, VIK received the distinction of Two MICHELIN Keys. The property was also previously named the “World’s Best Vineyard Hotel” by World Travel Awards.

Vik boasts world-class hospitality

It is important to note that the World’s Best Vineyards ranking is not a traditional wine-scoring system. Instead, it places greater emphasis on the overall winery experience, evaluating factors such as wine quality, architecture, landscape, gastronomy, hospitality, art collections, and visitor experience. In this context, VIK’s highly distinctive “destination winery” identity undoubtedly played a crucial role in its rise to the top.

In today’s global competition among luxury wine brands, crafting a great wine may only be the beginning. Increasingly, the true competitive edge lies in building an aspirational lifestyle centered around terroir, art, and immersive experiences.
