ASC Fine Wines and Germany’s Robert Weil are set to launch a new wine called ‘Saphir’ in the Chinese market, capitalizing on the growing popularity of Riesling.
The new wine, a 100% Riesling from Robert Weil, will be released this autumn, just in time for the seven-day Golden Week period during the National Day celebration in October, according to the importer.
Demand for Riesling in China is on the rise. As we have reported, in the first quarter of the year, the value and volume of German wines exported rose by 9% compared to the same period last year. Furthermore, exports to China surged by 47% in value and 39% in volume, highlighting China’s growing appreciation for German Riesling and its importance as a key market for German wine producers.

“We are absolutely thrilled to introduce Saphir to the Chinese market,” said fifth generation family member Robert Weil during his visit to China. “Saphir represents a contemporary interpretation of Robert Weil’s legacy of impeccable quality and consistency, crafted entirely from 100% Riesling. The label design draws inspiration from the exquisite paintings of lilies and ivy adorning the ceiling of our estate house’s dome, built in 1906. This blend of modern elegance and nostalgic charm encapsulates the essence of Saphir. The name ‘Saphir’ pays homage to our iconic Weil Blue, underscoring the rich heritage and enduring tradition of our winery. It will be officially available in the China market shortly.”
The iconic blue label, reintroduced in 1988 by Wilhelm Weil, is a tribute to the estate’s rich history, reminiscent of the original colors used when Weingut Robert Weil was founded in the 1870s. It is known among wine lovers as “Weil Blue.”
Weingut Robert Weil, which joined ASC’s parent company, the drink giant Suntory Group in 1988, is a crown jewel in Germany’s illustrious wine heritage. The estate, renowned for its pristine vineyards and state-of-the-art cellars, has expanded from 18 to 90 hectares over the past 35 years.
The estate’s vineyards are located within a 2km radius around the winery, with the Grand-Cru “Gräfenberg” vineyard prominently situated directly opposite. Robert Weil is unique in its comprehensive range of Riesling wines, from sparkling to dry, and all noble sweet variations, maintaining a world record with 33 consecutive vintages of Trockenbeerenauslese.
Historically, Robert Weil’s wines have graced the tables of European royalty and remain highly sought after today, achieving record prices. For instance, a 2003 Trockenbeerenauslese Gold Capsule was sold for €5,117 per bottle in 2010. International acclaim has followed, with Weingut Robert Weil consistently receiving top ratings from critics. The 2020 vintage garnered an average rating of 95 points from Robert Parker and 96.1 from James Suckling. The winery, described by Jancis Robinson as the “Jewel of the Rheingau,” is celebrated as an ambassador of German Riesling culture.
Makoto Nagae, CEO of ASC, expressed confidence in Saphir’s potential: “Saphir will offer Chinese wine enthusiasts a truly exceptional experience of Riesling. Through ASC’s extensive nationwide distribution network and dedicated wine services, Saphir will bring the full enjoyment and elegance of Riesling to discerning palates across China.”
